What Is AI SEO? A Plain Explanation for Business Owners
AI SEO is the work of making your website the source that AI-powered search engines cite. Here is what changed, what the work involves, and where to start.

AI SEO is the practice of making your website one of the sources that AI-powered search engines read and cite when they answer a question. It covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. It builds on traditional SEO, but the goal changes: instead of earning a position in a list of links, you are trying to be named inside the answer itself.
What changed in search
For twenty years a search returned ten links and the user chose one. That model is still there, but a growing share of queries now get an answer first. Google shows an AI Overview above the results for many informational and comparison searches, and AI Mode turns the whole page into a conversation. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini skip the list entirely: they read a handful of pages, write an answer, and cite the pages they used.
Three consequences follow for any business that gets customers from search:
- Fewer clicks reach the results list. When the answer is on the page, many people never scroll. The pages that still get clicks are the ones the answer cites.
- The answer is built from a small set of sources. An AI Overview typically draws on a few pages. An answer engine cites between three and ten. Being in that set is the whole game.
- Trust signals moved. Engines decide who to cite partly from what other sources say about you. Mentions on sites the engine already trusts matter as much as links did.
How AI engines choose what to cite
Each engine works differently, but the pattern is similar enough to plan around.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode start from Google's index and ranking. They mostly quote pages that already rank well for the query or a closely related one, then favour passages that answer the question directly, are clearly structured, and come from a recognised entity.
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini retrieve pages through their own search layers, read them, and pick sources that are specific, current and consistent with what other trusted sources say. Brand mentions across the web, review platforms and comparison articles carry real weight, because the engine is checking whether the recommendation is safe.
The common thread: the engine needs to read the page, extract a clean answer from it, trust the source, and prefer it over alternatives. AI SEO is the work of winning each of those four steps.
The four parts of AI SEO
1. Access: can the engine read you?
Every AI engine has a crawler, and a surprising number of sites block them by accident. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended all obey robots.txt. If your robots.txt says Disallow: / for one of them, that engine cannot read the site and will never cite it. Content that only renders with JavaScript is a second, quieter blocker, because most AI crawlers do not run scripts.
The fixes are simple: allow the crawlers explicitly, serve real HTML, publish a sitemap, and add an llms.txt file that summarises the site.
2. Answer readiness: can the engine quote you?
Engines lift passages, not pages. A page that opens with two paragraphs of throat-clearing before it gets to the point is hard to quote. A page that answers the question in its first 40 to 60 words, then supports the answer with evidence, steps and comparisons, is easy to quote.
Practical rules:
- Open every page with a direct answer to the question it exists for.
- Use headings that read as the questions people ask.
- Put steps in numbered lists and comparisons in tables.
- Be specific. Numbers, dates, named sources and examples get cited; generalities do not.
- Add a short FAQ of real customer questions with two or three sentence answers.
3. Entity clarity: does the engine know who you are?
Engines connect pages to entities. Organization or LocalBusiness schema markup, a consistent name, address and phone across profiles and directories, and the same description of what you do everywhere all make the engine confident it is citing a real, specific business. Inconsistency reads as risk, and engines avoid risk.
4. Authority: does the engine trust you over the alternatives?
This is the part most like classic SEO, with a twist. Links still matter because Google's ranking still feeds AI Overviews. For answer engines, mentions on sources they already draw on matter as much: industry publications, review sites, community threads and "best of" comparison pages. A business that appears in three trusted comparison articles will usually be recommended over one with a better website and no mentions.
AI SEO versus traditional SEO
| Traditional SEO | AI SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A position in the results list | Being named in the answer |
| Unit of optimisation | The page | The passage |
| Primary technical concern | Googlebot can crawl and index | Every AI crawler can read the HTML |
| Content style | Comprehensive coverage of a keyword | Direct answer first, evidence second |
| Authority signals | Backlinks | Backlinks plus brand mentions on trusted sources |
| Measurement | Rankings and clicks | Citations, share of answer, sessions and leads |
None of the traditional work goes away. It becomes the foundation that the new work sits on.
How to measure AI SEO
Rankings do not tell you whether an AI engine cites you. The measurement that works is share of answer: for a fixed set of buying questions, how often does each engine cite you, and how often does it cite each competitor? Track it weekly, because AI answers change faster than rankings. Then tie it to the numbers you already care about: sessions from AI referrals and classic search, and the leads those sessions produce.
The AI Visibility Checker runs a small version of this for free.
Where to start
- Run the free AI SEO audit on your home page and your most important service page. Fix anything in the crawler access group first.
- Pick the ten buying questions that matter most to your business and check who the engines cite today.
- Restructure your three most valuable pages so each opens with a direct answer.
- Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema and make your business details consistent everywhere.
- Earn one mention a month on a source the engines already cite for your topic.
Done in that order, most businesses see their first AI citations within four to eight weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI SEO different from GEO?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the part of AI SEO that targets answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. AI SEO is the broader term that also covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which behave more like classic search with an answer layer on top.
Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO?
No. AI engines lean on classic ranking and authority signals when they choose sources, so the technical and link work still matters. AI SEO adds a layer on top: readable by AI crawlers, quotable passages, clear entity markup, and mentions on trusted sources.
How long does AI SEO take to work?
Technical fixes and restructured pages usually show up in AI citations within four to eight weeks. Authority work and new page programmes compound over three to six months.
Can a small business do AI SEO?
Yes, and small businesses often move faster because there is less to fix. Allow the crawlers, answer questions directly on your service pages, add LocalBusiness schema, keep your listings consistent, and ask happy customers for reviews that mention the specific service.
